"I've been a marathon runner for 14 years, but what he shared about strength training made sense. And, I appreciate that - as much as he messes w/ me about cardio not being the real answer to weight loss - Jem does respect my passion for running & did not try to discourage or dissuade me.

Well hello! He's right again! Despite my less than stellar attendance in the weight room - I've made some great (measurable) progress & have met all of my initial goals. And I love lifting & feeling stronger - so I plan to continue it despite my crazy schedule. And bonus!!! I could tell a big difference in my legs on all of our hilly courses this past season. I can tackle the hills MUCH easier now that my legs are stronger.

BTW - I'm a 52-year old w/ no thyroid. And my fake thyroid hormones (via a daily pill) are way less forgiving to my metabolism than my previous awesome natural metabolism. I'd had serious concerns about balancing my piggy love of food w/ my aging metabolism, so I'm truly thrilled that (thanks to Jem) I've found something that fits me!

Lifting accomplished what 14 years of running alone did not! I'm actually at my high school weight!  More importantly - for me - I haven't felt deprived even once. That's huge for me because I love food and I will NOT stick w/ anything that makes me feel deprived!  I believe this is something that can be a permanent lifestyle adjustment for me...it fits!  Thanks again, Jem!"

Getting the chance to work with Jem couldn't have come at a better time. I was on a downhill spiral & had extremely rapid & excessive weight gain due to depression from a knee injury that brought everything to a screeching halt. He took the time to really understand what I needed & gave me more than a nutritional program.... he gave me my life back.

Everything you've taught me has helped me through one of the hardest times in my life. I've always been a self destructive emotional eater! I will just say these last few months (1 thing after another) have taken its toll on me physically, mentally, emotionally and by now I would have given up & ballooned 30+ lbs easily.....

I have to say thank you for making this so easy, keeping the lessons coming, & teaching me how to work around/maintain during days, weeks, months of far from ideal "weight loss" situations" loss"situations"

You are by far one of the best coaches I've worked with. The workouts you took me through were beneficial and enjoyable. You've remodeled the way I think about daily nutrition and "diet" as well. Your attitude, humor and outlook make you fun person to be around.

I ended up running the entire half marathon! Thought I would walk and run it but when I got to mile marker 7 and I was tired but knew I had another 6.1miles in me. I average less than 10 mins miles as well. not bad for ZERO pre-race run training! No doubt the cross training w/you is having some positive impact. First time I started a race without injury.

"It was one thing to have people I knew make comments about how good I looked, and much weight I lost. Now that I'm going a gym, I have people asking me things like. "how do I lose the fat on my abs". Or "how do I use this machine".   

To top it all off a regular client came in today, looked right at me and said "is val here today?". ...oh you mean fat Val? No, she quit."

3rd Update:  
"Jem, I can't wait to meet you in person this week. Most people are shocked to find out I've made the progress I have without ever meeting you face to face!  I was at the gym today and saw veins popping, the awesome veins only really fit people have! I'm getting them!

"I've always been on some kind of a diet...since I was in 7th grade. I even worked as a weight-loss counselor for a well known company while I was in college, advertising to other people a wonderful weight-loss "lifestyle". I thought I knew how to lose weight and be healthy, after all, isn't all of this common knowledge?

I kept losing the same 5 pounds over and over, month after month, year after year. I'll never forget the day my husband came home. We had made one of those New Year's resolutions which consisted of counting calories and loads of running. I can still see the anguish and utter confusion in his face, "I just don't get it."We were both running and spacing out our healthy meals, with no results. In fact, we were gaining!  At that point, I realized we were insane. I told my husband, "let's call Jem to see if he can help us."
I didn't realize at the time that this is one of the best decisions we have ever made as a couple. I cannot begin to express how calming and enlightening our first conversation with Jem was. We felt immediately relieved and inspired.  And then he gave us a customized solution...it was different, and made perfect sense. No more insanity!

From day to day, week to week, and month to month, my husband and I are accomplishing so many goals, including spending more quality time together.  I'm even doing full, REAL chin-ups now! My body is taking a shape I never thought I would see.

Even though we are in Houston, and Jem is in Austin, he is literally a text message or email away. He answers all of our questions in full detail, and is always ready with a solution.  I  can't tell you enough how amazing you are and what you've opened our eyes to. You have truly changed our quality of life!

Working with him weekly since Aug 2012 I have to date lost 18 additional pounds and toned up very well.  Going from a size 16 at 189lbs to now a size 6 at 147 pounds is an amazing transformation!

"When I met Jem about two months ago, I was all about cardio. I also was suffering from terrible shin splints that at times made it hard for me to even walk. I was stuck…I wasn't progressing like I had planned and was spending all my time trying while being in constant pain. Not fun at all! After sitting down with Jem I was surprised at that he had to say and it made sense.

A little about me; I am a single mom that works a lot and was spending my free time trying to fit in running, spending time with my girlfriends and dating. I love eating out and going to happy hour with friends. I would also feel guilty because we all know eating out and drinking is loaded with calories. How to solve the problem…run more!! Well running more wasn't working, I had plateaued, I hadn't seen results in months. Not to mention…again, I was in pain! 


Jem taught me some strength training routines that I can do in comforts my apartment. I do 4 exercises that take about 30 minutes 3 times a week versus running 1-2 hours 3 times a week. The exercises he taught me are fun and I set goals for progression. And a plus from this is I’m getting muscles. Running was just making me look lanky and not toned at all. the pain from running is gone now and that alone is life changing! 

As for eating, he taught me I can go out and eat with my friends and be able to stay within my calories for the day. This is great for my lifestyle.

Sitting down with Jem for an hour has completely changed the way I look at maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I can spend more time with my family and friends as well as eat and drink what I want while seeing results.  Thanks Jem!!!"

What is clean eating anyway? Exactly HOW do I get started counting calories? How do I lift differently to build muscle & strength vs to slim and tone?   

These were just some of the questions I asked Jem Yeh at our first meeting. I was so new to lifting, had tons of motivation - but no knowledge! Jem makes everything seem so simple. He immediately debunked all the misinformation I had been feeding myself from the internet about "clean eating", no alcohol, and spending HOURS in the gym.  


In about 2 hrs I had a whole new view on getting & STAYING fit. His nutrition plans are simple and to the point. YOU DO NOT have to GIVE UP the FOOD you love!  You do not have to quit drinking! It was that ah-ha moment - that made me know I could really do this.  He made me realize there is no guess work to losing weight, staying fit or building muscle.  Its all science and basic math.  I bought a kitchen scale to measure portions and downloaded my fitness pal. I only had to actually do the counting about 3 wks or less...then you just know how many calories your favorite foods have. You become aware of what you are actually putting into your body. I am ashamed to say how EASY this process is, considering what a mental block I had against it.  


His training on lifting techniques has also allowed me to keep adding weight to the bar! Which happens to be my main goal. His explanations of each lift are so well thought out and stated so plainly that every new lift, just makes sense. WHY you put your feet a certain way. HOW your stance effects your power. He leaves nothing to guess at - Strength Through Knowledge says it all.

Above all, he encouraged me, even as a new lifter, to compete and to push myself out of my comfort zone - much quicker than I ever would have. He believed in me from day one. I'm not just buying a ticket to watch my first competition - I'm wearing a number and looking forward to more!

"I have been in and out of gyms for years. Costly memberships, crazy diets, cleanses that were painful, and eating habits that were destructive. Never seeing much progress or only very temporary. I struggled with an eating disorder through most of 20’s and 30’s. Going from gaining over 100 lbs during each pregnancy to becoming dangerously thin at 5’11 and 109 lbs and bouncing back. Last year I made a decision to be strong and healthy.

Jem took time to listen to my struggles and understand the injuries I was dealing with. The evening of my first class I was completely terrified. I was so worried I’d not know what to do and what everyone in class would think of the awkward girl. Much to my surprise, everyone is incredibly supportive. They cheer you on when you feel like you just can’t, they applaud your wins and encourage you to try again when you’ve had a bad day.  Constant reminders that we all have rough days but if you show up, will be better. They were right. Some days are hard, but every day that I show up and do the work is a win. 

A year later, I feel confident walking into gym by myself. I know what to do and how to do it. Jem gives you the tools to be successful on your own. That said I wouldn’t give up my training sessions with him and my classes. I love watching the people around me grow and succeed. Along with Jem who keep me inspired daily."
